Latest Market Report

Market Report W/E 12/9/12 (copied from the email you should be receiving)

Goodness, what a drop in the temperature, hats and coats on in the market this morning, the cold wind made it as cold outside as in the giant fridges but at least it wasn't raining. Anyway let's start with some excellent news:-

Potatoes:-

FANTASTIC NEWS Our local potatoes have now started it is a variety called Agria it is suitable for boiling, roasting/chips and it also crisps well. The cooking type is floury, with excellent fry qualities. Agria has big, oval long tubers, yellow skin, and deep yellow flesh colour it will last about a month until the Maris Piper starts. This will take us to next May/June.

Salads:-

All salads, especially tomatoes, are increasing in price and we don't think this will improve for a few weeks, this is for several reasons firstly the light levels have drastically diminished which particularly affects anything grown in a glasshouse and as we reported last week the summer crops finishing and the autumn crops are not quite ready.

Also we should soon see some Spanish crops coming into the country which should help. We did buy uk loose tomatoes today 🍅 but English peppers are now coming to an end. All lettuce is still coming from our local grower and spring onions and baby salads from Evesham.

Fruit:-

Lemons have gone very short in supply doubling the price from a couple of weeks ago this is because transport from South Africa is having logistical nightmares avoiding the Ukraine war but the new season Spanish lemon will start at the end of the month and then we should see the price improve hopefully. We now have plenty of English apples but size uniformity is a little out of sorts but will improve soon also uk UK-grown conference pears are available but Williams and Comice have not started yet. We bought Wye Valley blueberry and strawberry today and English raspberry and we still have plenty of Turkish figs.

Vegetables:-

Cauliflower and broccoli seem to be in short supply and reflected in the price but we have plenty of other veg from the local area and even Brussels sprouts were available in the market this morning. Our recommendations for the weekend: - kale, Savoy, leeks, courgette and local squashes.
